Caminito del Rey Travel Guide
Everything You Need To Know Before Visiting Caminito del Rey
Caminito del Rey is a spectacular walkway in the province of Málaga, suspended along the walls of a narrow gorge between Ardales and Álora. Stretching nearly 8 kilometers, the route offers stunning views of cliffs, canyons, and the Guadalhorce River, making it one of the most scenic walks in southern Spain.
Daily visitor numbers are limited to protect the natural environment and ensure a comfortable experience, so advance booking is highly recommended. Whether you’re a fan of hiking, photography, or simply want to explore a unique part of Andalusia, Caminito del Rey is well worth the visit.
About Caminito del Rey
The walkway was built in the early 1900s (completed in 1905) to connect two hydroelectric plants. It allowed workers and materials to move through the steep Gaitanes Gorge. In 1921, King Alfonso XIII walked part of the path during the opening of the nearby dam, and it became known as Caminito del Rey – the King’s Little Path.
The current route is just under 8 kilometers long and includes forest trails, boardwalks, tunnels, and a hanging bridge. It is a linear path, starting at the northern access point near Ardales and ending at the southern exit near El Chorro. Most visitors complete the walk in 2.5 to 3 hours at a relaxed pace. The highest part of the path rises over 100 meters above the river. Along the way, you’ll see limestone cliffs, vultures circling overhead, and remains of the original concrete walkway. Caminito del Rey is now a protected natural area, with strict safety and environmental rules in place. The route is suitable for most ages and fitness levels, though good walking shoes and a head for heights are recommended.
Best time to visit Caminito del Rey
The best time to visit Caminito del Rey is in spring or autumn, when temperatures are mild and the weather is more stable. These seasons are ideal for walking the full route in comfort and enjoying the scenery. Summer (June to August) is also a popular time, but it can get very hot, especially in the middle of the day. Winter months are quieter, but rain or wind may lead to temporary closures for safety.
The route is open during daylight hours only. Morning visits offer cooler weather and softer light for photos, while afternoon visits give warmer tones and fewer crowds later in the day.

Hidden details to look out for along the trail
Caminito del Rey is known for its sweeping views, but there are also small, easy-to-miss details that make the walk even more special. Here are a few to notice:
Old pathway remains
Look below the new boardwalks and you’ll spot pieces of the original concrete path built in the early 1900s. Some parts still cling to the rock, offering a glimpse into how the old trail was constructed.
Industrial relics
You’ll pass remnants of the historic hydroelectric project – rusted pipes, tunnels, and machinery built into the cliffs. These mark the trail’s original purpose: to connect the nearby power plants.
Wildlife
Griffon vultures are the stars here, often circling high above the cliffs, but keep an eye out for mountain goats, kestrels, and swifts that live in the gorge. The quieter your walk, the more likely you are to spot them.
Plants growing out of rock
Notice the hardy vegetation – small bushes and trees growing directly out of vertical rock faces. It’s a reminder of how life thrives even in extreme conditions.
Mini waterfalls and springs
If you are visiting Caminito del Rey during rainy periods, look for water trickling down the canyon walls – especially in the Gaitanejo Gorge. It’s not dramatic, but it adds to the soundscape and shows how water shaped the entire landscape.
