This Caminito del Rey day trip was such an adventure, perfect to get your adrenaline pumping. The ravine was sooo tall, and sooo narrow in other places. Walking along that small footbridge, I felt like Indiana Jones! I never felt scared though, and hats off to Lila for taking such good care of us. She really made everyone feel safe and secure. Was a relaxed group of people too, so despite the physical aspect was a leisurely atmosphere. Málaga, Caminito del Rey… comparing the two, I preferred the Caminito del Rey!
I was hesitant to do this since I’m not great with sun, and I never go to the gym. But since we were staying in El Chorro, Caminito del Rey wasn’t far, and it was a shame to miss it. If you’re hesitant - don’t be. There’s ample shade, and a sunhat does wonders. It’s also not a difficult hike. If I had no issues, neither will you! EXPLORE SOARING, DRAMATIC GORGES AND CANYONS
Before you start, your guide will hand out helmets included in the Caminito del Rey entry ticket. You’ll soon see why they’re a good idea. The path follows a footbridge on the side of soaring cliffs, with impressive ravines everywhere. Some of the cliffs are over 400 meters tall! As you explore, you’ll see an exhilarating landscape of canyons and narrow valleys. At one point, you’ll be in a canyon only 10 meters wide. While you walk, look down periodically. You’ll see the Guadalhorce River rushing towards the Mediterranean Sea.
SEE HISTORICAL REMNANTS FROM THE INDUSTRIAL PERIOD
As you make progress, you’ll see old infrastructure from the 19th and 20th centuries. More specifically: historic hydroelectric plants. As your guide will explain, the Caminito del Rey was built to help workers at the plants travel more easily. There were two plants, at Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls. In fact, the reception booth at the start of the trail is the old Gaitanejo Hydroelectric Power Station. And it’s one of the oldest in Spain! A railway line also runs through the area, connecting Málaga with inland Andalusia, so you’ll spot its historic remnants. Expect to see tunnels, viaducts, service routes, etc.
TRAVEL BACK IN TIME AT THE CAMINITO’S ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES
The area around the Caminito del Rey has been inhabited since prehistoric times. As such, it hosts several archaeological sites. If you think you’ll miss them - you won’t. - Caminito del Rey is a one-way trail. Your tour starts at the north entrance (Ardales) and ends at the south entrance, in the town of El Chorro.
- You are welcome to bring a small backpack, but large backpacks are not permitted.

Board the shuttle bus at the Visitor Center, and disembark at the last stop. Then follow the pedestrian tunnel 200 meters before the “El Kiosko" restaurant. There’ll be clear signposts for the path’s northern entrance, where you’ll meet your guide.
