Unreal scenery and very fun hike

My daughter convinced me to do this Caminito del Rey day trip, and I’m glad she did! It was nice to switch the Costa del Sol for a mountain landscape. Nature is truly phenomenal. The steep stone walls and the narrow canyons take your breath away. Great for adrenaline seekers. We always felt safe, though. Our guide Fernando was very attentive. He even reminded us to put sunscreen on, drink water, etc. Plus he was funny and knew SO MUCH. I would definitely recommend the tour.

Well-organized day trip option

I very much enjoyed the Caminito del Rey Tour from Málaga. Breathtaking views but only moderate physical activity. I’m 53 years old, in extremely average shape, and managed it no problem. Organization was also fantastic. The bus was on time and very comfortable, and - thank God - had air-conditioning. It’s not a long drive, about an hour. Our guide also pointed out one of the White Villages along the way, which was cool. He also handed out goody bags with water and a fan. Definitely needed in the heat!

DESCRIPTION

Caminito del Rey Tour from Málaga

START WALKING THE CAMINITO DEL REY FOR BREATHTAKING VIEWS

Board your bus in Málaga, and relax as we drive to the Caminito del Rey. Once you arrive, your guide will hand out bottled water and give a short introduction. Start walking on a footpath along the side of a canyon, with thrilling views of sloping rock all around. For example, the Gorge of Gaitanejo: a narrow canyon only 10 meters wide! After that comes the Soto plateau, where you’ll see the wave-like, almost fluid “Butter Stairs”. Then you enter El Tajo de las Palomas, the second canyon. Here your guide will show you a desander. It’s a structure to hold sand and other sediments brought to the surface by canals.

CLIMB 100 METERS ABOVE IN DESFILADERO DE LOS GAITANES

After the second canyon, you’ll advance to the Valle del Hoyo - a valley with vibrant flora and fauna. Here you’ll come across wild pine forests, bat caves, and the captivating Sapito Pintojo pond. Rest a little, relax your legs, and then continue to the final canyon: Desfiladero de los Gaitanes. Here the Caminito will take you 100 meters above ground! It’s by far the most impressive part of the hike, so make sure you have your camera ready. Real thrill-seekers can get a sense for the height’s true scale by looking down while on the Hanging Bridge. It’s located 105 meters above ground, and hangs directly over an abyss!

LISTEN TO YOUR LOCAL GUIDE AS YOU WALK

The Caminito del Rey Tour from Málaga isn’t just a scenic hike. You’ll have a local expert teaching you the path’s history as you walk! It’s a full-blown guided tour. You’ll learn how the path was originally constructed in 1905, but had to be closed in 2000. This was because the walkway had deteriorated to the point of danger. However, restoration projects started in 2011, and by 2015, the walkway had reopened! The King’s Little Pathway - the literal translation of Caminito del Rey - was once again available to all.

ENTER THE BUS AND TRAVEL BACK TO MALAGA

Sit down and relax as we take you back to Málaga. Rest your legs after all that hiking, and enjoy the beautiful Andalusian scenery as we drive.

Did you know that Málaga City helped restore the Caminito del Rey?

By the late 20th century, the original Caminito del Rey had badly deteriorated. There were sections where part or all of the concrete had collapsed. This meant there were large open-air gaps. In addition to this, very little of the original handrails remained. So, in 2011, Málaga’s local government and Andalusia’s regional government decided to share restoration costs. This also included the museum, parking lots, etc. All in all, they spent €9 million! Finally, the walkway was reopened to the public in 2015, on March 29th.
