Out-of-this-world adventure

An amazing Caminito del Rey guided tour. The path does get quite narrow in some sections, but I felt very taken care of with our guide Jesus. He warned us about those narrow parts, handed out helmets, and kept our spirits up when the sun got hot. The views make it all worth it though. I got the best photos of my entire trip here! Reminded me a little bit of the Grand Canyon back home.

Great for adrenaline-seekers

The hike is roughly 3 or 4 hours long, but for us, it passed so quickly. The canyon is really impressive…those slopes are crazy! The organization was also great. Shuttle bus was on time, plus Mercedes was even there early waiting for us. I very much appreciated the helmets as well - helped us feel more secure. I would do the Caminito del Rey Tour from El Chorro again. And I would request Mercedes again as our guide. Lovely and knowledgeable woman.

DESCRIPTION

Caminito del Rey Tour from El Chorro

START THE CAMINITO DEL REY WITH A FOOTPATH A METER WIDE

Enter the shuttle, and relax as you drive towards the Caminito’s beginning. Start walking - the path starts with the tall, narrow Gorge of Gaitanejo. From wall to wall, this canyon is only 10 meters wide! You’ll walk a pathway built along the side of the gorge, in places a mere meter wide. It’s a thrilling experience, with dramatic views of the walls towering around you. Next is the El Soto plateau, where you’ll see a Neolithic cave from 5,000 BC! Then walk through a tunnel and enter the second canyon: El Tajo de las Palomas. This is where you’ll visit the Rocas Llanas Viewpoint, home to sweeping panoramic views.

ENTER THE GAITANES GORGE AND ASCEND 100 METERS HIGH

Continue down the path and enter El Valle del Hoyo - a valley full of lush vegetation. Here you’ll find the Sapito Pintojo Pond, a serene blue and green clearing. It’s the perfect spot for a rest, with tall carob trees overhanging. Once you’ve relaxed a little, enter the final canyon: the Gaitanes Gorge. Here you’ll be walking more than 100 meters above ground! This canyon has the best views of the entire Caminito and is the ideal place to snap some photos. There’s also a Glass Balcony along the way - you can stand directly above the abyss if you’re brave enough!

LEARN THE CAMINITO DEL REY’S HISTORY

The Caminito del Rey Tour from El Chorro is a guided tour. As you traverse the path, your local guide will teach you about its history. For example, did you know that Caminito del Rey means ‘The King’s Little Path’ in Spanish? It’s because King Alfonso XIII crossed the walkway in 1921. He did so to inaugurate the Conde del Guadalhorce dam. However, the footpath was built in 1905 for workers at two hydroelectric power plants. The two plants were at Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls. The pathway helped the workers transport materials and travel between the plants.

FINISH THE CAMINITO DEL REY AND ENJOY A DRINK

Exit the path at the south entrance, where you’ll find a bar with snacks and drinks. Sit down and reward yourself for completing the Caminito del Rey!
