Walking through Los Gaitanes gorge was beautiful. I debated whether a guide was necessary, but our guide, Luis, blew me away! He shared stories about the hydroelectric workers and showed us fossils in the rocks. I would never find this on my own. My favorite part was crossing the bridge. It gave me such an adrenaline rush! This was definitely worth the trip from Granada.
My wife and I had an extra day in Granada, and since we both love hiking, this tour was a no-brainer for us. Having transportation included was convenient. The trail’s past
Caminito del Rey was built in the early 1900s for workers at nearby hydroelectric plants. Back then, it was a narrow concrete path with no railings, hanging along the cliffs of Los Gaitanes Gorge. Over time, the trail showed its age and became very risky to walk. At one point, it was also known as “the most dangerous trail in the world”. After a few accidents, it was closed for major safety renovations. In 2015, it reopened with strong wooden platforms, railings, and helmets for visitors. Now, you can enjoy the same amazing views above the Guadalhorce River with much better safety. This keeps the adventure alive while feeling secure every step of the way.
